Dwight Howard may have gotten his wish. According to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, Head Coach Stan Van Gundy and General Manager Otis Smith have been removed of their duties.
Van Gundy spent five seasons in Orlando, while Smith had a run of six years before being terminated. In his five years of head coaching duties, Van Gundy took the Magic to the playoffs every season, and reached the NBA Finals in 2009, but were upended by the Los Angeles Lakers. Van Gundy will exit Orlando with the most wins and the best winning percentage in Orlando Magic history.
Although Dwight Howard has one year left in Orlando, they may try to clean house and trade him during the offseason, as Howard has expressed interest in playing in Brooklyn for the Brooklyn Nets next season.
It’s a shame that such a great coach was fired, mainly because he and the star player couldn’t get along. I’m sure whoever lands Van Gundy, should he continue to keep coaching, will reap the rewards.
