They don’t make many NBA prospects like Wall is built. When you’re talking about the complete package at the point guard position, Wall has to always be in mind.
He had solid stats throughout the 2009-10 season for Kentucky, and played a large hand in helping first-year head coach John Calipari turn Kentucky around and back into a NCAA powerhouse.
Their run ended in the Sweet 16, but Walls run is just about to begin, as he’s almost certainly going to be the first player to hear his named called in the 2010 NBA Draft.
NBA Position: PG
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 195
School: Kentucky
Strengths
In the mold of Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo, Wall has exceptional speed, quickness, and overall athleticism. He sees the court with elite vision, and has the body control to finish around the rim.
Wall can play on a whole new level when he’s on, and has the explosiveness and ability to finish at the rim that few points guards can even dream of.
He has tremendous size and strength for the position, and is already a one-man fast-break machine that cannot be stopped one-on-one.
He still can’t rely on his shot or fundamentals the way many technical point guards can, but his instincts and decision-making is improving.
Weaknesses
Wall is still extremely raw. Once you get past all the warmth and fuzziness that his athleticism and explosiveness gives off, he’s still clearly a player who needs some work.
That doesn’t mean he can’t step-in from day one and compete at the NBA level, because he most certainly can. But without a more consistent jump-shot and a more polished offensive game, he won’t be able to consistently put up more than 16 points per game at the next level.
While he has tremendous vision and instincts in the open floor, Wall tends to slow down as the pace slows down. When he’s not running, he plays to the tempo of the game, and his play-making easily deteriorates. He’ll have to find a balance between leading fast-breaks and managing half-court offenses.
Another area he will have to work on is defense. He obviously has the tools to physically guard anyone he needs to, but simply hasn’t applied it. He focus on defense needs to be better, as does his focus in the flow of the offense, as he can be prone to turnovers when he tries to force the issue.
